Member Spotlight – Tommy Weeks
- What made you want to join RockBox Fitness Mooresville?
I had always done running for my cardio workouts and I wanted to change it up because all the running I was doing was taking a toll on my knees. I also felt that kickboxing would allow me a type of training that was more practical towards my job.
- What are your fitness goals?
My main fitness goal has always been to stay athletic. I enjoy being able to continue to participate in sports especially hockey and golf. The work on the bags are great for working on short bursts of speed that are needed to play hockey. And the functional training allows me to work on the core muscle groups and the smaller muscle groups that help with golf such as claves and forearms.
- What are some of your successes since becoming a RockBox member?
Prior to joining Rock Box I had already lost between 30-40lbs. That’s the easy part. The hard part is maintaining that weight lost. And since joining I have been able to maintain that weight lost. Not just through the workout but also through the meal plans as well. I’ve learned some better eating habits and still being able to indulge myself.
- When did you join RockBox?
I joined 1 year ago in February.
- What was your previous fitness program/ activity?
I always tried different workouts and tried to focus on weight lifting. Any type of weight lifting that worked on max weight with low reps. I also changed my running routines. I focused primary on long distance running at first but then switched to interval runs where I would do 30 second sprints and 60 jogs for 30 minutes.
- About you: Where are you from, what do you do, what are your interests?
I’m originally from Maryland and have lived in Mooresville, NC for 17 years this April. I moved down here for my job when I joined the US Customs Service and for them for 7.5 years. And next week will be my 9 year anniversary of working for the US Marshal Service. I trained in 2 different martial arts while working in law enforcement, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Krav Maga and I am trying to become a defensive tactics instructor at work. I have always wanted to be an athlete and was a founding member of 2 hockey teams. My high school hockey team in Maryland and the US Marshal Service hockey team in Washington DC. I still like to play pickup hockey on some Saturday nights in Pineville. And I love playing golf. I have planned certain vacations to just play golf and played Whistling Straights in Wisconsin where the PGA Championship has been played 3 times and I spend a week in Ireland and played 6 rounds of golf. 4 rounds were played on golf courses that were built in the 1890s including Ballybunion Golf Club which is Ireland’s St. Andrews.
- What’s your favorite boxing combination?
I like the combinations that involve the slips and the rolls. I feel those combinations allow you to work on your counter techniques plus it gives you that extra momentum you need to get the most power behind your punches.
- What’s your least favorite functional exercise?
My least favorite just came up recently. The functional move that involve the sliders. I just feel like I don’t get much out of them I would rather just do reverse lunges with a dumbbell.
- What’s your favorite healthy meal or snack?
Apples and Bananas because you don’t have to worry about keeping them cold.
